Alarming Stats

~ According to Eureka Alert, polypharmy among children is on the rise.  It states, “according to [a] study, the most frequent combination were stimulants such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) or dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine, Adderall) commonly used to treat ADHD, with another psychotropic medication.”


~ Rosemary D. Laird, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at University of Kansas Medical Center reports that the elderly make up 12% of our population and account for 32% of prescriptions.  She also states that the average use of medication for people over 65 is:

  • 2-6 prescriptions
  • 1-3.4 over the counter medications
  • Average senior is paying $670/yr on medication


~ The Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers reported that the use of certain psychotropic drugs, like antidepressants and stimulants, in 2- to 4-year-olds doubled or even tripled between 1991 and 1995.


~  Polypharmacy is responsible for up to 28% of hospital admissions and is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.
